USS Lexington – WWII Era Ship Matchbook Cover
Here’s a cover that’s currently in the news. This ship was lost as sea off the coast of Australia back in WWII. From the Wall St. Journal article of this date:
“The carrier was crippled in May 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea after being hit with bombs and torpedoes, with 216 crew killed. It was sent to the bottom after 2,735 crew were evacuated by another American warship, the USS Phelps, to prevent its possible capture by Japan.”
Certainly and interesting read, and another reminder how much history is behind so many matchbook covers.
